Edward "Ed" Allen Vaughn, 75, of Clemson died Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Vaughn was a son of the late George R. and Evelyn Ringbloom Vaughn.
He graduated from Lynchburg College in 1962 and he earned his M.S. in Textile Technology from the Institute of Textile Technology in 1964. In 1966 he joined the Clemson faculty as an Instructor in Textiles. During the period 1967-69, he studied textile physics at the University of Manchester in England where he earned his Ph.D. He returned to Clemson in 1969 to continue his teaching and research activities. He served as Department Head and then Director of the School of Textiles from 1977 through 1989, then continued his teaching and research until his retirement in 2005, when he became Professor Emeritus. He remained active in teaching undergraduate and graduate students, conducting research in the development and analysis of textile materials, and working with the textile industry in the areas of manufacturing, product development and materials analysis. He was a consultant and educator for INDA, a nonwoven textiles trade association, from which he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. He served as the Managing Editor of the Journal of Engineered Fibers and Fabrics.
He was also very active in the community, having been a board member and actor with the Clemson Little Theatre and president of the Clemson Downs Homeowners Association, and a member of the Clemson Fellowship Club, the Clemson Lodge 254 AFM, the Finer Diners Supper Club, and Fort Hill Presbyterian Church. He was also a part-time magistrate for the City of Clemson.
Dr. Vaughn will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He was a beloved husband, friend, colleague, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed being "Pop Pop" to all this eight grandchildren. He loved all things Clemson-was proud to be on faculty at the university his entire professional career and a resident here for the last 49 years.
Surviving are daughters, Julia Lynne (Ross) Blauwkamp of Huntsville, AL, Jennifer Sue Vaughn of Durham, NC, Katherine Mae Vaughn of Clinton, SC, and Deborah Ann (Benjamin "Bo" Crader) Vaughn of Clemson; brother, James Vaughn and sister, Molly Frank, both of Youngstown, OH; and grandchildren, Katherine "XiXi" Blauwkamp, Kaili Blauwkamp, Zachary Blauwkamp, Ian Blauwkamp, Helen Crader, Henry Crader, Edward Crader and Elizabeth Crader. He is also survived by his companion and friend Patricia Ivester.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Helen "Sue" Haid Vaughn; and a brother, George "Skip" Vaughn.
Funeral services will be 11 am Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church with Rev. Laura Conrad officiating. Burial will be at 4 pm Tuesday at Old Stone Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, SC, and again following the funeral ceremony at the church on Tuesday.
