Easley, South Caroline

Eleni "Helène" Vrouvakis, 88, of Easley, South Carolina, loving wife of Dimitri Vrouvakis, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2026.

Born on September 27, 1937, in Cairo, Egypt, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Irene Karageorgis. She leaves behind a legacy that is woven through the hearts of those who cherished her spirit and felt the warmth of her presence. Eleni grew up in a diverse international community and was proficient in five languages. She shared many adventures with her husband, Dimitri, whom she met in elementary school in Egypt. From their early acquaintance when she was only nine, a beautiful love story blossomed, culminating in their marriage on April 16, 1961. Together, they traveled the world, living in Egypt, Greece, Congo, Cameroon, Tunisia, China, and the United States of America, and visiting many other destinations throughout their wondrous journey together. Their partnership spanned a remarkable 65 years, a testament to a bond forged in friendship, respect, and love. Eleni was not only a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, but also a respected professional who made significant contributions throughout her life. Her journey led her to serve as a Ground Hostess for Sabena Airlines, where she fostered connections and created memorable experiences for travelers. Her career continued to flourish as she took on the important role of managing the Commissary for the employees of the United States Embassy in Tunisia, demonstrating her keen abilities and dedication in the workplace, while always remaining humble and caring. Above all, Eleni was a beacon of light in every community she touched. With her infectious joy for life, she exuded kindness and humor that inspired others. Regardless of her personal challenges—including two cancer diagnoses and an open-heart surgery—Eleni's unwavering spirit remained intact, teaching those around her the true essence of resilience. Her ability to enjoy life, even in adversity, served as a guiding example for family and friends alike. A nurturing heart led her to dedicate countless hours volunteering for various local organizations, revealing her profound compassion for children and the elderly. Her commitment to service not only exemplified her character but also enriched the lives of many who were fortunate enough to encounter her kindness. Eleni was a member of the International Women's Club and the Bridge Club, where she cultivated friendships and shared cherished moments. Her love extended across borders; she made precious contributions to orphanages in Tunisia, embodying her commitment to ensuring that every child felt cared for. Faith played a pivotal role in Eleni's life. As a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Greenville, South Carolina, she found solace and strength within her community and nurtured her spiritual well-being. This deep-rooted connection to her faith provided her with the guidance and support that would accompany her throughout her extraordinary life.

In addition to her husband of 65 years, she is survived by a son, George Vrouvakis (Elvira); a daughter, Irene Vrouvakis-Doyle (David); a brother, Giannis Karageorgis; four grandchildren, Alexandra, Elena, Athena, and Dimitri; as well as many in-laws, nephews, nieces, and other family members in Greece, Germany, and France.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two siblings, George Karageorgis, and Chrissa Petraki.
