Elizabeth (Betty) Harris Carter died on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 having recently celebrated her 68th wedding anniversary. Betty was born in Asheville, NC on February 27, 1932 as the third child of Henry Herman Harris and Elizabeth Lukie Moss Harris. She developed lifelong friendships from her early school years at St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines, from her long association with Kanuga Conference Center, and as a member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Betty received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Greensboro College, a Master of Education in Personnel Services from Clemson University and a Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Georgia.
Betty had a long life of service as a US Army military wife, then as a case manager for the department of social services and a Liberty Middle School guidance counselor. She was a tireless volunteer, active with the League of Woman Voters, Red Cross, church ministry, Habitat for Humanity, and other charitable organizations. She loved the mountains, the water, her tea, travel, classical music, and live performances.
Family was important to her. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, sister, Mary Emily Harris, and grandson, John Henry Gautsch. She is survived by her brother, Henry Moss Harris, husband, William Gettys Carter, three daughters, Beth Carter (Bob) Gautsch, Ellen Carter (Brian) Hughes, Joanne Carter (Patrick) Fitzgerald, and grandchildren, Lydia Grace Hughes, Gretchen Carter Hughes (Turner) Zsupnik, and William Edward Gautsch.
In lieu of flowers and to honor her dedication to supporting others, the family has requested that donations be made to the American Red Cross or to the World Central Kitchen “in Memory of Betty H. Carter”. A donation of blood or plasma to the American Red Cross would be a thoughtful gift in memory of Betty H. Carter and John Henry Gautsch (11/1/1995 – 1/18/2021).
Friends and Family visitation will be held at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Homes, 108 Cross Creek Road, Central SC 29630 on Sunday, September 10 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
