Elizabeth Arnold Collar

Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Collar, 88, of Easley, South Carolina, wife of the late Dwight Allen Collar, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026.

Born in Belfast, Maine, on November 8, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Elmer “Ben” Benedict Arnold and Inez May Fletcher Arnold. Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt whose family was the center of her life. She was a homemaker, and she cared for those she loved in many quiet and lasting ways. She enjoyed spending time with friends and built a life marked by warmth, kindness, and devotion to others. She loved cats and found joy in sewing, often making clothes for her children. Reading, playing cards, especially Solitaire, and working word puzzles and crossword puzzles were among the simple pleasures she enjoyed. She also loved thrifting. After moving to Easley, South Carolina, in 1992, she became very active in the Newcomers Club, where she stayed engaged with others and enjoyed friendship and community. One of the most meaningful relationships in Betty’s life was with her sister, Priscilla, who was her favorite person in the world. The two spent a great deal of time together, and that bond remained especially dear to her. Betty also showed her love through thoughtful acts of generosity. Her niece, Rhonda, was a teacher at Kermit Nickerson Elementary School in Swanville, Maine, and while Betty was out thrifting, she would often buy school supplies and send them to her. Those gifts helped Rhonda, her school, and many children.

Betty is survived by her son, Matthew Collar; three daughters, Christine Collar, Alane Collar, and Margaret Retter (Scott); three grandchildren, Zackary Retter, Seamus Collar, and Shannon Collar; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Roy Arnold; and four sisters, Carolyn Madden, Pauline Petipas, Mary Arnold, and Priscilla Bishop.

Services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.ALZ.org, or by simply picking up a few classroom necessities to donate to a local school, carrying forward the quiet kindness she showed throughout her life.
