Elizabeth Belser Fuller

Elizabeth Belser Fuller, 98, of Clemson Downs Retirement Center, died Monday, January 19, 2009.
Born in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of the late William Gordon and Mary Elizabeth Wilson Belser. She attended Converse College and graduated from the University of South Carolina, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Psi Omega, and Delta Delta Delta. She later took graduate courses in the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago.
Although primarily a homemaker, she worked for seven years with the SC Department of Welfare and the Children's Bureau and for seven years, was the business manager of Columbia's Town Theatre, where for over 25 years, she also acted and volunteered backstage. Involved in many cultural and civic organizations, she served on a number of boards of directors, among them, the Junior League of Columbia, the Columbia Stage Company, the Children's Bureau of SC, the Anderson County Arts Council, Anderson Heritage, and was a president of the Richland County Mental Hygiene Society, the Columbia Drama Club and the Anderson Garden Club. She was an honorary life member of the Columbia Garden Club and belonged to the Colonial Dames XVII Century Chapter. As an artist, she was an active member of the Anderson Art Association, the Blue Ridge Art Association, the SC Watercolor Society, and exhibited in many shows with a number of one-man shows. She was the artist for the Anderson Tri Centennial Committee and for a number of years, was "artist in residence" for Clemson University's horticultural gardens, now the South Carolina Botanical Garden.
Mrs. Fuller, the widow of Willis Fuller, was the eldest of six siblings. She is survived by one sister, Pauline B. Riley of Columbia, SC and is predeceased by a brother, William G. Belser, Jr., and sisters, Gulie B. Blythe, Caroline B. Grimball, and Alice B. Kirby. Also surviving are a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Arnot of Columbia, SC, a stepdaughter, Melissa F. Hester of Montgomery, AL, and a stepson, Willis Fuller, Jr. of Charleston, SC, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Fuller was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Clemson. There will be a committal ceremony in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pendleton, SC at 1 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2009.
