Elizabeth (Betty) Birchenough Martin, 96, widow of Frederick G. Martin, Sr., passed away October 11, 2011 at Oconee Memorial Hospital. Born in Patterson, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth Birchenough. Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Elmira College, Elmira, NY and later served as an Alumni Trustee on the Board of Trustees. She lived most of her life in Skaneateles, NY where she was a homemaker, member of St. James Episcopal Church, Skaneateles Country Club, volunteer at St. James Thrift Shop and member of various bridge groups. After moving to Clemson, SC in 1985, Betty was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Clemson, a volunteer at Clemson Downs and a member of bridge groups.

In addition to her husband Frederick and her parents, she was predeceased by son Frederick G. Martin, Jr., granddaughter, Sandra Nix, brother Arthur Birchenough and sister Helen Martin.

She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Longo of Pendleton; daughter-in-law, Brenda Martin of Anderson; granddaughter, Marcia N. McTaggert (Stephen) of Alabama; brother William Birchenough (Gwen) of Asheville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. The family also includes the workers at Clemson Downs Assisted Living who became part of her life and took such wonderful care of Betty.

Private graveside services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Churchyard in Pendleton. A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson, October 14, 2011 at 1:00 PM, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
