Raymond Erl Campbell, 65, of 112 Capers Street, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at his home.


Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Mr. Campbell was a son of Eleanor Mae Gormly Campbell of Jacksonville, Florida and the late Winton Grier Campbell Sr. He graduated from Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida and he received a BA in Economics and Businesss Administration from Furman University in 1966 where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.


Mr. Campbell spent over thirty years in banking including the former Peoples National Bank, Southern Bank & Trust, and Summit National Bank. For fifteen years, he attended Augusta Road Baptist Church where he was the former treasurer of the Nurturing Sunday School Class, and a former co-director of the Angel Choir. A former member of the Board of Directors of Samaritan House in Greenville, Mr. Campbell was also a loyal supporter of the Greenville High Red Raiders. As a 1st Lieutenant of the U.S. Army, Mr. Campbell served from 1966 to 1968.


Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Sandra Taylor McGregor Campbell of the home; a son, Raymond Erl Campbell, Jr. (Kari) of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Catherine C. Patterson (Terry) of Sanford, N.C.; a brother, Winton Grier Campbell, Jr.(Mary Anne) of Raleigh, N.C.; a step-son, Britt McGregor and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Hanner of Greenville; a step-daughter, Cami McGregor Madden (Tim) of Greenville; eight grandchildren, Christopher Campbell, Lauren Campbell, Ryan Campbell, Makayla Patterson, Joshua Patterson, Trevor Patterson, Anna Britton Madden and Amelia Madden; an aunt, Isabell Gormly of Jacksonville, Florida; a nephew, Mike Campbell, of Brisbane, Australia; and a niece, Debbie West of Portland, Oregon.


A Celebration of Life will be 4:00 PM Tuesday at Augusta Road Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Chris Cadenhead and the Reverend Toni Pate officiating. Escort of Honor will be the members and former members of the Angel Choir.


The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM prior to the service.
