Ernest Lander

Dr.Ernest McPherson (Whitey) Lander, Jr. 97, of Clemson, husband of the late Sarah (Tish) Shirley Lander, died Saturday, August 17, 2013.

Dr.Lander was a native of Calhoun Falls, SC, a son of the late Ernest McPherson Lander Sr. and Kizzie Jones Lander. Dr. Lander was a graduate of Wofford College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Lander was a long- time Alumni Professer of History at Clemson University before his retirement in 1983. He was the last surviving grandson of Dr. Samuel Lander, founder of Lander University. During his teaching career Dr. Lander also served as a Fulbright Lecturer at universities in Calcutta, India, 1966-1967 and Lagos, Nigeria, 1970-1971. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, several historical societies, and the Clemson United Methodist Church. During World War II he served as a staff sergeant and an information specialist in the AAF in the India-Burma theater. Dr. Lander was also the author of numerous books and articles, mainly of South Carolina and Southern history.

Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Lander Purcell and Caroline Jones Lander; a former son-in-law, Michael Purcell; a granddaughter, Connie Purcell, a sister, Margaret Lander Scheibler, four nephews, James A.Lander, Robert B. Lander and Thomas and John Baskin of Idaho. In addition to his wife, Dr. Lander was predeceased by two brothers, William and Samuel Lander and a sister Miriam Lander.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 2:00 P. M. at Clemson United Methodist Church. A private burial will be at Woodland Cemetery (Cemetery Hill) on Clemson University Campus.
