Evelyn K. Bitzer
Clemson, SC
Evelyn Kinsley Bitzer, 99, Clemson Downs, died Nov. 28, 2011 at the Clemson Downs Health Care Center.
Born on March 5, 1912 in Bound Brook, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence Kinsley. Upon graduation from high school, Evelyn worked as a secretary in New York City. She vividly recalled being at work the day the stock market crashed in 1929. After marrying her husband, Willard F. Bitzer, she worked at home for many years raising a family before returning to the outside work force as a secretary at Limestone Corp. Newton, NJ. During her twenty-five year employment with the company, she rose to the position of executive secretary. After she and her husband retired, they spent the early years of their retirement at Jekyll Island, GA. In the mid-eighties, Evelyn and Willard retired to the Clemson, SC area, where she enjoyed being active at Clemson UMC, the Seneca Women's Club and playing bridge.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son and her son-in-law, Whitfield Gray. She is survived by her daughter Diane Gray, Lenexa, KS, son, Gerald (Dianne) Bitzer, Central, SC; five grandchildren, Ashley (Locke) Walker, Autumn (Scot) Sullivan, Tristin (Samir) Nangea, David Bitzer and Michael (Andrea) Bitzer; and six great-grandchildren, Grayson and Merritt Walker, Whitfield and Phoebe Sullivan, Devi Nangea and Andrew Bitzer. Additionally she is survived by her dear friend and care-giver, Dot James.
Evelyn possessed a kind, generous heart and wonderful sense of humor. Throughout her life, Evelyn enjoyed a cup of hot tea in the morning, observing and worrying over the ups and downs of the stock market, taking an afternoon siesta, and eating an Oreo cookie any time of the day. Her children and grandchildren will forever cherish their memories of times spent with her.
The family would like to thank the staff at Clemson Downs Health Care for all their dedicated care of Evelyn during her time there.
Funeral services will be 3 PM, Thursday in the Chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 PM, Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.
