Evelyn F Doerr, aged 101, passed away peacefully on June 17 at Clemson Downs in Clemson, SC. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer who passed away in 1990.
Evelyn was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on November 18, 1915, the daughter of Fred and Blanche Johnson. She grew up in Oklahoma City where she met the love of her life, Elmer Doerr, in high school. They were married in 1935 and had two sons, Marvin and Chris. Music was always part of family life and all four members of the family played the piano and sang in school and church choirs. In 1954, the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri and joined Gethsemane Lutheran Church where Evelyn and the rest of the family were in the choir, and the sons became organists and choir directors over the years.
Evelyn and Elmer retired to Charlotte, NC. Warmly welcomed by many new friends wherever they lived, Evelyn enjoyed her much appreciated wide circle of social and church friends. Many will recall her special sense of humor and fondness for the good works of people. After Elmer's passing, Evelyn moved to Clemson Downs where, among other interests, she enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, well into her 90s. Bright and alert to the end, she always preferred asking others how they were rather than talking about herself. She will be missed by her family and her many friends. Evelyn always supported her church and had special consideration for other organizations that helped people in need.
Evelyn is survived by her sons and their wives, Marvin and Jean Doerr of Clemson, SC and Chris and Stephanie Doerr of Jacksonville, FL; four grandchildren (Allison, Kristina, Robert and David) and three great-grandchildren (Ethan, Gracie and Nico).
There will be a celebration of life service for Evelyn at the Clemson Downs later this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name to her church, Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, 101 Edgewood Avenue, Clemson, SC 29631, or to Doctors without Borders.
