Evelyn Baker Epps

Evelyn Baker Epps, 94, widow of William M. Epps, died Sunday, June 21, 2009.
Born in the Hebron Community, Williamsburg County, on February 7, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Cleveland and Margaret Wilma Plexico Baker. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and taught home economics at Greelyville, Hebron, and St. Andrews (Charleston) High Schools. She was an assistant home demonstration agent with the Clemson Extension Service in Sumter County. After moving from Charleston to Clemson in 1956, she was a substitute teacher in Pickens and Oconee County Schools.
Mrs. Epps was an active member of Clemson United Methodist Church, serving in the following offices: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Circle Leader of the United Methodist Women; Chairman and member of the Evangelism Committee; lay delegate to the World Methodist Conferences in Nairobi, Kenya, and Singapore. She also assisted her late husband on several UMVIM mission trips to the Caribbean, Central and South America.
She was active in the Winthrop Alumna Association and was on the Scholarship Committee of the Clemson Chapter. She was a member and past president of the Clemson Garden Club and was active in the Clemson University Woman's Club. She was a charter member and past president of the Clemson Chapter of Home Economists in Homemaking.
Surviving are two sons, James W. Epps and wife Nellie of Belden, MS, Philip O. Epps and wife Judy of Prosperity; grandchildren, Corey B. Epps and wife Michelle of Memphis, TN, Karley J. Epps of Columbia; and a brother, Glenn H. Baker of Florence.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 PM Tuesday at Clemson United Methodist Church with Reverend Paul Hutchison officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
Committal services will be at 1:30 PM Tuesday in Old Stone Church Cemetery prior to the funeral service.
