Evelyn Gillespie Freeman

Evelyn Gillespie Freeman, 85, wife of the late James Malcolm Freeman, of Easley, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023, after a long illness.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Vanwyck and Emma Smith Gillespie.

Mrs. Freeman was a 1955 graduate of Easley High School. Upon graduation, she went to work for A. Foster McKissick and spent her professional career of nearly forty years in his employ, working at both John Foster Motors and Fairlane Finance. She remained with Mr. McKissick when he formed The Litchfield Company of SC, where she served as office manager and treasurer of the company. Mrs. Freeman was a member of Easley First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Freeman is survived by a daughter, Beth F. Miller (Robert) of Piedmont; two grandsons, Matthew Miller (Katy) of Goose Creek, SC, and Chandler Miller of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a great-granddaughter, Sloan Miller of Goose Creek, SC; and a sister, Jean Lark (Rev. Dr. Marion) of Henderson, NC.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynne Hammond; a brother, Jerry Gillespie; and four sisters, Lillian Chapman, Doris McAbee, Bobbie Langston, and Muriel Tooly.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2023 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.

The family thanks the staff of NHC Anderson for the excellent care given to Mrs. Freeman for the past six years, and to Hunter Evans of Caris Hospice for the support and comfort he gave to Mrs. Freeman in her final days.
