Evelyn Rhodes Thompson

November 22, 1923 — June 26, 2018

Evelyn Rhodes Thompson, 94, widow of John Lester Thompson passed away, Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the Residences at Park Place in Seneca.

Evelyn was born in Augusta, Ga, a daughter of the late Henry Dowling and Evelyn Elizabeth Williams Rhodes.  She graduated from Tubman High School in Augusta in 1940 and attended Winthrop College. During WWII she supported the  US Army at the Augusta Arsenal. She was responsible for the Veteran's Affairs committee for the Disabled at the Veteran's Hospital in Augusta during the 1980's & 90's.  She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the First Families of South Carolina. During the 1930's she was affiliated with the Augusta YWCA. Following her marriage she and her husband lived in many different towns in South Carolina and she was very active in the local churches and other community organizations.  She was a member of Pendleton Presbyterian Church, Aiken Presbyterian Church, Union First Presbyterian Church, John Knox Presbyterian Church in Greenville, Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, Fairview Presbyterian Church in North Augusta and First Presbyterian Church in Augusta. When she lived in the Aiken area she was a member of the Friendly Neighbor Club in the Herndon Dairy Road Area.   She enjoyed flower gardening, family vacations, swimming, family gatherings and reunions, bird watching and spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are sons, John Lester Thompson, Jr. (Nan) of Seneca, William Dowling Thompson (Sharon) of Seneca, Henry Wayne Thompson (Sally)  of Townville, and Paul Sheppard Thompson (Daphne) of Tega Cay; sister, Kathryne Elizabeth Charles Boone of Statesville, NC; grandchildren, Wendi Thompson Graham, Jenny Thompson Mattingly, Rick Thompson, John Michael Thompson, Amanda Thompson Parkins, Will Thompson, Sarah Thompson Linkins, Lauren Thompson Pannell, Adam Thompson, Darby Thompson and Jordan Thompson; great grandchildren, Josh Graham, Zack Graham, Olivia Carver, Wyatt Thompson, Owen Thompson, Dylan Thompson, Ruth Thompson, Will Pannell, Ben Pannell, Sam Pannell, Evie Linkins, Henry Linkins, Hazel Thompson, Conrad Thompson, Seth Thompson and Millie Kate Thompson.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, David Rhodes Thompson; sister, Nancy Virginia Smith; grandchild, Dowl Thompson Jr and great grandchild John Henry Lester Thompson.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 AM, Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Saturday, June 30, 2018 in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with burial to follow in Old Stone Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Pendleton Presbyterian Church, Pendleton, SC.
