Frank E. Gabrels

Frank Erwin Gabrels, 83, died Saturday, May 26, 2012 in Clemson, S.C. He was 83. He was born in
Fairburn, Georgia on February 26, 1929, the son of Lawrence E. Gabrels and Elsie Mae Jackson Gabrels.
After graduation from Savannah High School in 1949, he trained to be a draftsman before joining
the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War. Upon returning, he attended Clemson University,
where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1957. It was here he developed a love of
Clemson University athletics, especially football and baseball. He worked for Savannah Electric and
Power Company in several capacities for almost 30 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Savannah, Ga. for many years.
He and his wife, Joyce Laverne Wells Gabrels (who preceded him in death in 1999), took early
retirement and moved to Clemson in 1986. He could often be seen tooling around town in a convertible.
In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
He is survived by a daughter, Laura Gabrels Metcalf, and a grandson, Milo J. Metcalf, both of
Indianapolis, IN. He will be missed by many friends.
A graveside service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, June 9th at Old Stone Church
Cemetery in Clemson with a gathering to follow at Goobers in Clemson.
