Fred William Owens, 98, husband of the late Lillian Parsons Owens, of Easley, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2024.
Mr. Owens was born in Pickens County, a son of the late James Tilman and Wilhelmina Cooper Owens. He graduated from Easley High School and was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for almost 40 years. He was a member of St. Andrew Methodist Church, where he served on various boards, including church treasurer. A gifted athlete, Mr. Owens was the top ranked tennis player in the state of SC in his age group at age 50 and again at age 80 and he won multiple medals in the Senior Olympic Competition including the National Championship in 3-Man Basketball. Mr. Owens was one of the founding members of the Easley Tennis Club and started the Tennis Program at Easley High School, where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He also served as social director at the Litchfield Country Club's Tennis Center and volunteered with United Christian Ministries for over 25 years. Mr. Owens served with the Army National Guard.
Surviving are his two sons, Tony J. Owens (Leslie) of Greenville and Phil D. Owens (Lynn) of Easley; his daughter, Barbara O. Goggans (Steve) of Pawley's Island; six grandchildren, Jill Owens, Diana Owens, Heath Owens, Adrienne Dail, Graham Goggans and Stevie Claire Goggans; and four great-grandchildren, Quentin, Owen, Theodore, and Molly.
In addition to his loving wife of 65 years, Mr. Owens was predeceased by a son, David William Owens; brothers, Ned and Leon Owens; and a sister, Jane Patterson.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at St. Andrew Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 PM on Friday, November 1, 2024 at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.
