Frederick Tyler Simon

Frederick Tyler Simon passed away in his home on Monday, February 16, 2009, at the age of 91.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 9, 1917 he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Lillian T. Simon. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene Schoening Simon; two daughters, Karla Simon and her husband Leon Irish of Annapolis, MD and Frances Simon and her husband Paul Ellis of Greenville, SC; two grandsons; Bart Ellis of Greenville, SC and Tyler Ellis of New York, NY; his sister Elsie Winston, of Sherman Oaks, CA. and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Simon was educated at Carnegie Mellon University, Philadelphia University, Charleston University and Marshall University. He began his career in private industry as a research chemist for several companies including Union Carbide and then came to Clemson University in 1968 as the J.E. Sirrine Professor of Textile Science. He later became Professor Emeritus of Textile Science.
Mr. Simon specialized in the niche field of color science. Color technology and standards that he helped develop have been applied to the fields of textiles, plastics and printing. He lived and taught in many foreign countries throughout his life and maintained conversational ability in several languages.
He and Irene were long time communicants of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson and have a special affinity for its mission church, St. Paul's in Pendleton.
During the last 10 years, his daily passion was woodworking, building numerous pieces of furniture and toys for his friends and family. Mr. Simon recently completed the construction of new red, entry doors for St. Paul's which were dedicated to Irene. He was active in the Pendleton District Woodworkers and the Greenville Woodworkers Guild.
Many who knew him would agree that Mr. Simon was a hard worker, a good provider and motivated his loved ones to strive for great things in their lives.

Memorial Services will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church at 193 Old Greenville Highway in Clemson at 11:00am on Friday, February 20, 2009. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Frederick Tyler Simon Endowed Scholarship Fund at Annual Giving Office, Clemson Fund, PO Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29633.
