Easley
Garnet Andrew Barnes, 88, loving husband of Pauline Burgess Barnes for sixty-seven years, passed away peacefully at his home on February 25, 2013.
Born in Pickens County March 13, 1924, Mr. Barnes was the son of the late Andrew and Mattie Smith Barnes. A graduate of Easley High School where he was inducted to the Easley Athletic Hall of Fame, he attended Furman University and various real estate and insurance schools. He was also a US Army veteran having served in WWII. He founded Barnes Real Estate, Inc. and Barnes Insurance Agency, Inc. He was also affiliated with Pinnacle Associates and was co-founder of Smithfields Country Club and Golf Club.
Because of his love for people and community, Mr. Barnes served on various committees. These include Deacon for First Baptist Church of Easley where he has been a member for seventy-eight years; Trustee of Furman University; member of the Board of Trustees of the Baptist Health Care System for twenty-seven years; founding member of the Palmetto Health Board of Directors; one of the Founders and Director of Peoples National Bank; member of the South Carolina State Development Board; recipient of the Order of the Palmetto; past president of Pickens County Country Club and Smithfields Country Club.
For thirty-five years Mr. Barnes and many special friends enjoyed fly fishing trips together. He and his wife, Polly, also shared many wonderful travels together.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Barnes was predeceased by brothers, Ray and Carl Barnes, and sisters, Ruby Sloan, Kathleen Estes and Viola Sloan; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rev. William L. and Louise B. Freeman. In addition to his wife, Mr. Barnes is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Steven Freeman, Blue Ridge Hospice; and caregivers, Jennifer Bright, Traci Saad, Linda Chambers, and Margaret Smith.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Easley with Rev. Dr. John Adams and Rev. Clint Freeman officiating. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM Tuesday at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.
Pallbearers will be Tim Tollison, Joe Lesley, Michael Tollison, Roddey Gettys, Rut Galloway and Patrick Patterson. Honorary Pallbearers include The Roy McCall Sunday School Class, present and past business associates, Joe's Breakfast Club, Palmetto Health Hospital Board Members, past and present, and People's Bancorporation Board Members.
Flowers will be accepted; however, memorials may be made to "For Generations to Come Fund" at First Baptist Church of Easley, 300 East First Avenue, Easley, SC 29640.
