Gary Neal Askew

April 13, 1952 — February 13, 2021

Gary Neal Askew died Saturday February 13, 2021 at AnMed Hospital, Anderson, SC after an extended illness. Born April 13, 1952, Gary grew up in the close-knit communities of Marietta and Slater mill village in northern Greenville County, SC. All who knew Gary loved him, and will long mourn his loss.

In high school, Gary excelled in all sports and had a shelf full of trophies that attest to the fact. He attended Slater-Marietta High School, North Greenville College and the University of South Carolina. Gary was an enthusiastic Gamecock fan and attended home games when he could.

Like so many of his friends and family, Gary worked in textiles for most of his adult life, including at the J.P. Stevens fiberglass plant in Slater and in a managerial position at the Milliken Enterprise Plant. He and his beloved wife, Betsy Koser Askew, the love of his life resided in Easley, SC since their marriage 33 years ago. Gary and Betsy cherished their many Pickens County friends, but Gary held a special place in his heart for his Slater Marietta friends who remained a treasured part of his life until the time of his death. No one ever had a better, more dependable and more enduring friend than Gary Askew. His passing leaves a palpable void among his circle of close, lifelong friends and the larger community of those who lived their formative years in that little mill village and beyond.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Robert Allen "Bat" Askew and Ethel Bridwell Askew and two of his sisters: Frances Askew Roberts and Mary Lou Askew Burry.

His brothers, Eddie (Wanda) Askew, David (Sharon) Askew and Broadus "Bud" Askew, his sister Bobbie Askew Alexander, along with Betsy's sister, Amy (Brad) Koser Fricks, and brothers, Jim and Rob Koser are among those who grieve Gary's passing, but celebrate his life well lived.

Due to Covid restrictions, a celebration of Gary's life will be scheduled at a later date.
