Major General (Ret) Hugh J. Clausen

Major General (Ret) Hugh Joseph Clausen, 82, of 333 Kendra Place, died Thursday, May 7, 2009 at AnMed Health Medical Center.
Born in Mobile, AL on Christmas day 1926, he was the son of the late Hugh M. and Hazel Orrell Clausen. He attended Springhill College, the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville and the University of Alabama School of Law and was awarded the Juris Doctor degree. He also attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School and attended Commander General Staff College and Army War College.
He served over 34 & 1/2 years in the United States Army before his retirement in 1985 as the Judge Advocate General of the Army. He was the thirty-first officer to hold the highest position in the Judge Advocate General's Corps.
He was a veteran of WWII and served in Korea and Vietnam. He served in Vietnam as the Staff Judge Advocate of the 1st Infantry Division, 1968-1969. He was subsequently Staff Officer, Plans and Operations Division, and later Chief of the legislative Liaison in the Office of the Secretary of the Army. From 1971-1972, General Clausen was Chief of the Military Justice Division in the Office of the Judge Advocate General. He served as the Executive, Office of the Judge Advocate, from 1972-1973. General Clausen was Staff Judge Advocate, III Corps and Fort Hood, 1973-1976. He returned to Washington DC in 1976 as a general officer and Commander, United States Legal Services Agency and Chief Judge, United States Army of Court Military Review.
General Clausen was named Assistant Judge Advocate General for Military Law in 1978. He was promoted to Major General in 1979 and became the Assistant Judge Advocate General. In 1981, he became the Judge Advocate General. After serving as the Judge Advocate General from 1981-1985, General Clausen retired to South Carolina and became the Vice-President for Administration and Secretary of the Board of Trustees at Clemson University.
His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Sue Richards Clausen of the home; a daughter, Melinda Clausen of Cincinnati, OH; and a son, Joseph Clausen and wife Jillayne of Houston, TX.
A Mass will be 11 AM Tuesday at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Clemson with Father Sandy McDonald officiating. Burial with Military honors will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
