George Thomas "Tom" Busby, Jr., 70, loving husband of Shirley Godfrey Busby, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026. Born and raised in Abbeville, SC, he was a son of the late George Thomas Busby, Sr. and Mary "Bonnie" Campbell Busby. Tom was a member of Christ Methodist Church and was an avid Clemson Tiger fan.
Tom proudly served in the Army National Guard and retired as Sergeant Major from the United States Army. During his military service, Tom served in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the United States Joint Service Commendation Medal, the United States Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara by the United States Field Artillery Association. Tom’s military service was a testament to his character and dedication to his country, having served in the Army National Guard with deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq.
He leaves behind a legacy marked by dedicated service, both in the military and law enforcement. He began his distinguished career in law enforcement in 1978 as a South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper. He joined the Greenville City Police Department in 1980 and rose through the ranks until his retirement in 2000 as a Sergeant. In addition to his role as Sergeant, Tom also held the positions of Corporal and Detective, showcasing his versatility and commitment to public safety. Tom also served as a Special Deputy United States Marshal Task Force Officer for the US Attorney’s Office - working in organized crime and drug enforcement. After retiring from the Greenville City Police Department, Tom continued to serve his community as a uniform patrol officer with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. His commitment to service extended to his involvement with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Association, where he was an active member. He was also a Mason at #404 Wade Hampton AFM and a member of the American Legion Post 52, reflecting his values of community engagement and brotherhood.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Tom had a profound love for reading and was particularly passionate about military history. His intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for learning were hallmarks of his personality.
Along with his father, Tom is preceded in death by his beloved Schnauzer, Maxx.
In addition to his wife of 32 years, he is survived by two daughters: Carson Dula (Jason) and Kelly Treadway; son, Andrew Treadway; grandchildren, Evie and Anderson Dula and Kelsie and Emilee Treadway; sister, Laura B. Willis; brothers, Steve Busby (Beth) and Ricky Busby (Sherry); many nieces and nephews and his faithful Australian Shepherd, Gus.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Robinson Funeral Homes - Powdersville Road with his burial to follow in Robinson Memorial Gardens with military rites.
