GEORGE L. CLEMENTS - Seneca

George Leland Clements passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at the age of 88, in Seneca, SC. Mr. Clements had lived in the Upstate since 1995, first at Clemson Downs, and for the past year at Seneca Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Clements was born in Bowers Beach, DE, on the Delaware Bay, on October 28, 1918, the son of Leland Day Clements and Mamie Flach Clements. He earned a B. S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, PA, and worked for several major chemical manufacturers until his retirement from Pittsburgh Plate Glass in 1980.

On January 17, 1942, he married Nancy Hamilton Minick, whom he knew from school and church in their town of Oaklyn, New Jersey. Nancy and George were happily married for 56 years, until Nancy's death in 1998. Mr. Clements was an officer in the U.S. Navy, 1941-1945, serving in the Atlantic during World War II. During his career in the chemical industry, George and Nancy lived in Colorado, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and, for thirty years, New Martinsville, West Virginia.

Mr. Clements was a terrific pianist, whether playing Chopin or Scott Joplin. Playing and singing and listening to music were an important part of his life. He is remembered at Clemson Downs for accompanying the sing-a-longs that he and Nancy organized, and for entertaining the residents of the Health Care Center. Public service was important to him, and he is remembered as a long-time member of the Wetzel County Library board of directors in West Virginia, and as a volunteer with the county Ambulance Service.

George Clements is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nancy, and his sister Marie. He is survived by his daughter Margaret Edie and son-in-law Dan Edie of Seneca, and his son Stephen Clements and daughter-in-law Brooke Greiner of Seattle. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sharon (Edie) Cooper and her husband Kevin; John Edie and his wife Kara; Morgan Clements and his wife Rachel; and Dylan Clements; and by his great-grandchildren Kayleigh and Alyssa Cooper; and Riley and Jeremy Edie.

Mr. Clements will be remembered for his sense of humor, and his generous, cheerful and courteous nature. He will continue to be a wonderful example to all who knew him.

The family is grateful to Seneca Health and Rehab, and to the OMH Hospice of the Foothills, for their excellent and caring service. There will be a private memorial for George later this year, when his ashes will be interred next to Nancy's in West Virginia. Memorials may be given to a charity of your choice.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.robinsonfuneralhomes.com or in person at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central-Clemson Commons, who is assisting the family.
