George Pierce Mehaffey, 88, formerly of Clemson, South Carolina, husband of the late Joan Ferguson Mehaffey, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at Rolling Green Village where he had lived for the past 14 years.
Born in Asheville, North Carolina, he was the son of the late George and Morene Mehaffey. George graduated with honors from Sand Hill High School in Enka, North Carolina in 1953 and from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia in 1958 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the ROTC and graduated Georgia Tech as a commissioned officer. While stationed at Fort Jackson he was promoted to the rank of captain in the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps.
He retired from his professional career at BASF on December 31, 1999 after 40 years of service as the Chief Engineer, managing the engineering and maintenance departments at the Clemson site in upstate South Carolina. During his work career, he was sent to Germany, the Netherlands, Mexico, and Canada. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading and faithfully followed Georgia Tech in any sport that they may be competing in. He was a member of Pendleton First Baptist Church. Above all, he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and many friends.
Surviving are his two children, Rick Mehaffey (Mitzi), and Kay Mehaffey Capps (Wayne); and two grandchildren, Alexis Mehaffey and Emily Mehaffey.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 7, 2023, from 2:00 PM until 2:45 PM in the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum at Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley, SC 29642, with a service to follow at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum.
