George M. Moore, 93, of Clemson, husband to Betty M. Moore, passed away on April 23, 2025.
The youngest son of the late Thomas Stephen Moore and Irene Elrod Moore. George entered Clemson College as a Freshman ROTC Cadet in September 1949 but left to enlist in the USAF during the Korean War. He served with the 12th Fighter Wing, 8th Air Force, out of Austin, TX with extended duty at Manston RAF in England and Misawa AFD in Japan.
After military service he studied Public Relations at The University of Texas and earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Clemson University in 1958. He was a member of Tiger Brotherhood, Blue Key, and PKA Fraternity. Following graduation, he worked with the NASA Missile Firing Laboratory at Cape Canaveral, FL, and was a member of the launch team that successfully orbited the Explorer IV Scientific Earth Satellite.
He returned to Clemson and joined the University’s Alumni and Public Relations Division for a 30-year career, retiring as Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations and Development. He was a member of the American College Public Relations Association, The American Alumni Council, and The Council for The Advancement and Support of Education. He received the University’s Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1975; and Limestone College awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1983.
Active in many civic organizations, he was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church for 66 years. He and his wife were MYF Counselors and he served on a number of Church Councils and Committees.
George is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty M. Moore; daughter, Allison Ammons (Jim) of Easley; grandsons, Jay Ammons (Madelyn) and Ryan Ammons.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Thomas and Harold, and a sister, Patricia M. McCall, all of Seneca.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
A private burial will take place at Cemetery Hill on the campus of Clemson University.
