George Thomas Reid, Sr., 81, of 906 Maw Bridge Road died Tuesday, May 17, 2011.

Born in Norfolk, VA but raised in the Kings Grove Community of Pickens County, George was a son of the late William R. and Lillian Ramsey Reid. He was a former employee of Cannon Mill of Central and retired after 34 years of service with the USDA Cotton Testing Service at Clemson University. In 1952 George began what would become a lifelong devotion of service to his beloved community when he started the George Reid Wrecker Service which he loved and continued to provide up until his death on Tuesday.

George was a mason and was an original member of the Central Rural Fire District Board of Governors. He was a Marine Corps Veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He was raised in the Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church and later attended Mt Zion United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Rebecca Wilbanks Reid of the home; sons, George T. Reid, Jr. (Lynn), Jesse W. Reid (Rhoda), and Gregory Allan Reid (Shawna) all of Central; brother, Dicky Reid of Six Mile; sisters, Patty Kelly of Millerton, NY, Janie Entrekin of Central and Lois Rittenhouse of New Jersey; grandchildren George T. Reid, III (Ashley), Becky Macijewski (Tim), Jessica Reid, Jacob Reid, Cheyenne Reid and Conner Reid; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Macijewski, Josie Macijewski, William A. Reid and Jayda E. Reid.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Friday in the Chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with burial to follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Thursday at the funeral home.

The family is at the home of Greg and Shawna Reid, 120 Poplar Mountain Road, Central.
