Gertrude A. Harris
- Easley
Gertrude Atkinson Harris, 92, of 125 Springdale Lane, wife of the late W. Marion Harris, entered into the arms of Jesus surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 20, 2011.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Robert Lihue and Martha Alice Alexander Atkinson, Mrs. Harris was a homemaker and a member of Easley First Wesleyan Church since 1935 where she belonged to the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.
"Homemaker".... it just doesn't do her justice. In the garden at the mountain home in Eastatoe from dawn to dusk as she protected her beloved better boy tomatoes from weeds, worms, and an occasional copper head. Later those tomatoes were transformed along with her beans and corn into jars of soup that were given to family and friends. Along with gardening she still had time to tend to her bees, pick wild fox grapes along the river, and to gather yellow root for what ails you. And then there was the corn ... a call would go out that she'd just picked 50 dozen ears of corn and we'd gather in the garage in a circle of chairs as we shucked, cleaned, cut, and talked until done. Later we'd eat Granner's corn on the 4th of July or at Christmas along with her macaroni and cheese, fried okra, and amazing strawberry shortcake. And what did Gert fix for herself? Often it was vienna sausage and a pack of crackers. Even as she was surrounded by packed cupboards and freezers, Marion would come home from a tennis match and ask "What's for dinner" and she'd say "Grilled Cheese Sandwiches". Gert just wasn't concerned about herself but was the most unselfish person.
