Gertrude Sanders
- Easley, S.C.

Miss Ellen Gertrude Sanders, 97, formerly of Foothills Presbyterian Home, died Thursday, October 19, 2006, at the Presbyterian Home in Clinton.

Born in Sumter, SC, Miss Sanders was a daughter of the late Richardson and Hattie Frazier McLeod Sanders. She studied piano since she was five years old and she graduated from Winthrop College in 1932 with a B.S. Degree in public school music. After graduation, she attended every band clinic she possibly could, beginning with one in Chicago. After teaching at the DAR School in Tamassee, Miss Sanders was able to achieve her musical goal by coming to Easley in 1942 to direct the band. She replaced James Pritchard who started the band one year earlier, but he was unable to continue after being drafted into the Army. Following her retirement as band director for twenty-five years, she directed the musical programs at all the Easley area grammar schools for seven years.

Miss Sanders was Director of Music for Easley Presbyterian Church for many years. Also, she was a member of Easley Presbyterian Church where she taught Children's Sunday School and played piano in the primary department.

Miss Sanders was the last surviving member of her immediate family, including her long-time friend, Millie Kelly, who predeceased her.

Graveside funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Greenlawn Memorial Park conducted by the Reverend Dr. Bill Seel and the Reverend Julie Schaaf. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the Foothills Presbyterian Home.

Memorials may be made to the Organ Fund of Easley Presbyterian Church, 200 South First Street, Easley, S.C. 29640.
