Gilbert Gene Leonard, 94, of Simpsonville, South Carolina, husband of the late Martha Ruth Leonard, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
Born in Thomasville, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Marvin and Grace Leonard. A proud veteran, Gene served in the Air Force during the Korean War. His time instilled in him values of discipline and integrity, which he carried throughout his life. After returning, he dedicated himself to education and athletics, exemplifying his servant's heart in all that he did. Gene's career as the Athletics Director at Quantico High School in Quantico, Virginia was nothing short of extraordinary. He passionately coached football, basketball, and baseball, inspiring countless young athletes along the way. His leadership guided all three teams to numerous state championships, reflecting his deep commitment to excellence and the personal growth of every student. Gene's coaching extended beyond the field; he was a mentor and a friend, making a profound impact on the lives of those he engaged with. Education was essential to Gene, who attended Henderson State Teachers College for his undergraduate studies and later graduated from Indiana University with a master's in teaching. As a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gene cherished the moments spent with his family. He was proud of each accomplishment, big or small, and took great joy in sharing life’s milestones with them. Gene’s nurturing spirit and warm smile made him the heart of his family, and his kindness touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
He is survived by a son, Phillip G. Leonard of Reedville, Virginia; a daughter, Lynn Kubiak (Dr. Joseph Kubiak); a sister, Gail Shuller; two grandchildren, Jim Kubiak, and John Kubiak (Jessie Kubiak); and three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jade, and Kendall.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Joestein Leonard, Glenn Leonard, Jerry Leonard, and Hubert Leonard; and three sisters, Doris Eddinger, Pat Taylor, and Audrey Leonard.
There will be a private graveside service in Robinson Memorial Gardens.
