Grace Simons Lanham Lewis, born on December 30, 1921, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2024, at her home in Clemson.
Born in Johnston, SC, she was the daughter of the late David Edgar Simons and Jessie Rhoden Simons.
Grace was a graduate of Winthrop University, Class of 1943. She began her teaching career at Edgefield High School. In 1956 she and her family moved to Clemson where she became an English teacher at D.W. Daniel High School for 16 years before retiring.
Beyond her professional endeavors, she actively volunteered at Clemson Downs and was a dedicated member of the Clemson Garden Club and the Clemson University Women's Club. Grace was also an active member of First Baptist Church of Clemson since 1956.
Grace was a loving wife, mother, grandmother (our Mimi), and great-grandmother who will always be remembered for her dedication to family and her ability to make new friends and establish connections with others wherever she went. She was an avid supporter of the Clemson Tigers, and she also found joy in flower arranging, reading, traveling, and sewing. Most importantly, Grace cherished the time spent with her family. Summers were filled with beach trips and the holidays were always spent together.
Grace is survived by her daughter Beth L. Redmond (Jerry) of Clemson, son Bill Lanham (Karen) of Clemson; her grandchildren, Dan Nickless (Laurie), Mary Beth Russell (Adam), Kate Hutto (Beau), Caroline Weghorn (Matt), Justin Lanham, and Johnsie Stancil (Nick); great-grandchildren, Emily Russell, Charley Hutto, Haddie Russell, Harry Hutto, Mary Kate Russell, and Coley Stancil; her son-in-law Jim Nickless; and fifteen nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children William Joseph Lanham, her second husband Herman Lewis; her daughter Jean Nickless; and her brothers David Simons and Robert Simons.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. in the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church Clemson. A celebration of Grace’s life will follow in the church sanctuary at 2:00 p.m.
A private graveside service will be held at Woodland Cemetery at a later time.
