Grady Bennett Wingard, 82, of Clemson, died Thursday, September 25, 2008 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late George Shelton and Lillian Lee Connelly Wingard.

Mr. Wingard resided in Columbia, SC until he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed at the navel base at Pearl Harbor. After the war, he returned to civilian life and graduated from Newberry College with a B.S. degree in Commerce. In 1950, he married the former Martha Carlisle of Newberry, SC.

Most of his career, Mr. Wingard worked for the state department of mental health. He retired in 1983 as Deputy Commissioner of Administrative Services, South Carolina Department of Mental Health. During his career, he was recognized as Outstanding Employee, South Carolina State Hospital, and Outstanding Employee, Department of Mental Health. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from the South Carolina Employees Associaton.

Mr. Wingard spent the majority of his life in Columbia, SC where he was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church. There he served on the church council as secretary for one term and as vice-president for two terms. He also taught Sunday School for the Men's Bible Class. In 2002, he moved to Clemson, SC where he was a member of Clemson Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Martha; daughter and son-in-law, Celeste and Jeff Rakes of Dover, DE; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Steve Miller of Clearfield, PA; and daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Stephen Benedict of Clemson, SC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Rebekah Rakes Mitchell, Joel Rakes, Daniel Rakes, Jacob Miller, Caleb Miller, Jenny Miller, Elizabeth Benedict, and David Benedict. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Carl Wingard.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Monday at Clemson Presbyterian Church, 346 Old Greenville Highway; Clemson, SC 29631. Committal services will be at 4 PM Monday in Bush River Memorial Gardens; 5400 Bush River Road; Columbia, SC.

Visitation will be prior to the service on Monday at Clemson Presbyterian Church from 10 AM until 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemson Presbyterian Church; 346 Old Greenville Hwy.; Clemson, SC 29631 or to Ebenezer Lutheran Church's Christmas Service; 1301 Richland Street; Columbia, SC 29201.
