Gregory Foote Mann of Clemson, South Carolina, husband to his lifelong partner Janet “Slim” Cox Mann, finished his final round on September 2, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born on December 15, 1948 in Syracuse, New York, to Margaret “Peggy” and John “Jack” Mann, he was raised alongside his older siblings, Barbara Mann Miller and J. Bradford Mann. Mischievous, quick, and always looking for the next game, his first drives came on the football field. He starred as a talented wide receiver until injuries proved to be an unplayable lie. But Greg never lost his competitive spirit, shifting his game from football to golf and a career in life insurance and financial planning.
Soon after they married, Greg and Slim added three talented children to their twosome — Geoffrey, Alison, and Kathryn. Greg was their biggest fan, never missing a match, race, or meet. His custom sweatshirts, scrapbooks, and camcorder home videos were legendary, capturing not just the sporting events, but the holidays, lake trips, other adventures and laughter that made the years fly by. Those same tapes roll in family rooms today with sounds of laughter and Greg’s voice still booming from behind the lens.
On the course, Greg was an ace and golf tournament organizer extraordinaire. For 24 years he spearheaded The Adirondack Invitational and The Barkeater golf tournaments, memorable gatherings where he proved again and again that the best part of golf was never the par or birdie — it was the company he kept and the memories created.
When Greg and Jan retired, he took his golf game from Onondaga Golf & Country Club to The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards and captained his boat, Piece of Ship, on Lake Keowee. He pulled his kids and grandkids on tubes with a shiny dome, a steady hand, and a grin that widened as their laughter grew. Surrounded by friends at The Cliffs, he found another kind of clubhouse, built on stories, community, and lake life.
Off the fairway, Greg’s booming baritone could rival Neil Diamond himself — “Sweet Caroline” and “Cracklin’ Rosie” were among his favorites. He was a music lover and a true lyricist in his own right; he had a gift for crafting amusing poems to celebrate life’s milestones. He was a natural jokester, always ready with a clever pun and a funny face. Greg was an expert bargain hunter who found great joy in saving a buck, a BOGO deal was his idea of a hole-in-one. Finally, he had a tender heart for animals, especially for his beloved dogs.
His greatest legacy, though, was not in tournaments or trophies, but in family. In addition to his three children, he took great pride in his five grandchildren — Jackson, Ethan, Phoenix, Rowan, and Sienna — he was “Boom-Boom”, a nickname that mirrored his golf swing and booming personality.
Greg is survived by his wife, Jan; their children, Geoffrey Mann (Annamarie), Alison Stemm (Robert), and Kathryn Mann; and his grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother, J. Bradford Mann (Nancy), and their children, Jennifer McNutt and Christopher Mann.
Greg’s final round may be complete, but his bellowing laughter, love of music, and unique sense of humor will keep echoing down the fairways for all who loved him.
