Dr. Harold N. Cooledge

Harold N. Cooledge, PhD died Thursday, January 27th at the Clemson Downs Medical Center.
Dr. Cooledge was born to the late Harold N. Cooledge of Atlanta, GA ad the late Rebekah Clark Cooledge of Moultrie, GA, October 15, 1922.
Dr. Cooledge was graduate of Harvard in chemistry. He worked in the oil research industry until the Texas City explosion in 1947. He returned to graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in architectural history and art. After teaching at other Universities and Colleges he was hired at Clemson University in 1956. He retired from Clemson in 1996 as an Alumni Professor in the School of Architecture, Art and Humanities. He received the ACSA Distinguished Professor Award in 1988. He was the faculty advisor for the fraternity Sigma Alpha Zeta which became the Pi Kappa Alpha national fraternity at Clemson. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Clemson. He was active in both academic and musical organizations. He organized the first Clemson Fencing Team in 1970 and served as the first coach. He was an author of many historical writings, the latest was "Samuel Sloan", Architect of Philadelphia 1815-1884", published in 2009 by Ishi Press.
Dr. Cooledge is survived by many cousins. He was the last of his immediate family.
A Memorial service will be announced at a later date.
His friends wish to thank the staff of the Clemson Downs Medical Center for their wonderful care of Dr. Cooledge.
His request was that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Clemson University Foundation for the Harold N. Cooledge, Jr. Professorship in Architecture.
