Haskell Hensley Whitmire, also called "Butch" went to his home in heaven on April 11th, 2025.
He was greeted by those who have went before him. His father Clyde Crawford Whitmire and mother, Essie Porter Whitmire, his sisters Lucille Whitmire Chastain (Ed), Yvonne Whitmire Durham (George), Gladye Mae Whitmire Nix (Donald), Sylvia Whitmire Cantrell (Jerry), along with all of his brothers, Claude Whitmire (Mildred), Roy Whitmire (Patricia), Donald “Pete” Whitmire, Bob Whitmire (Doris), Johnny Whitmire (Betty), and his wife of over 50 years, Betty Joan Chappell Whitmire.
Here on this side of Heaven, broken hearted, is his one and only daughter Amanda Whitmire Cope (Ryan), his one and only Granddaughter Thelma Clarice Cope (Westin Edwards), along with his sisters Sue Whitmire Farmer (Thad), Dianne Whitmire Sanderson (Fred), and Cathy Whitmire Young (Larry).
For those who never met him, words cannot fully describe him. This obituary will give one a glimpse of what he was like. He was born in Pickens County SC, on August 23, 1943.
From a young age, Butch's quiet strength and unwavering dedication to his family and passions were evident. He was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes.
As a young man, Butch was drafted to serve in the Army during the Vietnam Conflict. However, due to what can only be described as Divine Intervention, he was reassigned to Panama as an aircraft mechanic. It was here that his technical skills were put to good use, and his future was shaped by this unexpected turn of events.
Upon returning home, Butch continued to work tirelessly as a maintenance technician at Alice Manufacturing Co. for most of his career. Yet, his hard work didn’t stop at the factory gates. At home, Butch was always busy—planting vast gardens, chopping wood, fixing anything that needed repair, and training bird dogs. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for gardening, bird hunting, and fishing.
Butch’s dedication to his family was unwavering. His wife, Betty, and daughter Amanda were his pillars of joy, but it was his granddaughter Thelma who held a special place in his heart. He would quietly observe others as they approached little Thelma, captivated by her charm. Nothing made him prouder than seeing her blossom. Butch's love and support for his family were apparent in the special traditions he upheld, and the impact he had on their lives was immeasurable.
