Hazel Loraine Phillips

November 17, 1930 — December 19, 2015

Lt. Col. Hazel Loraine Phillips passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at National Health Care in Mauldin.


Col. Phillips enjoyed a career in the U. S. Air Force Nurse Corp.  Before joining the Air Force she was employed at John Hopkins Hospital and was a night supervisor at Anderson Memorial Hospital. During her service in the military she was a staff nurse, flight nurse, chief nurse, and nurse recruiter.  She received the bronze star during her tour in Vietnam, several commendation awards, and many other awards. During her career in the Air Force her overseas assignments were in Japan, Morocco, Spain, Vietnam, and Turkey.


After retirement from the Air Force she was employed as a nurse practioner at DHEC and Family Practice Center in Anderson where she retired in 1990.


During her retirement Col. Phillips enjoyed playing bridge, flower gardening, and participating in various church and social activities.  Her last years she spent many hours on the phone with family and friends.


She was a member of Walhalla First Baptist Church.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Ettie Gillespie Phillips; two brothers, Etheridge and Charles Phillips; three sisters, Sadie Stewart, Faith Hunnicutt, and Edith Phillips.


She is survived by two sisters, Sue Edney and Jean Rackley, one brother, Sam P. Phillips, and numerous nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Pendleton First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery with full military honors.


The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM prior to the service at the church.
