Helen Martin Ponder, 93, of Raines Road, departed this life and was ushered into the presence of her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, July 10, 2006, at Laurel Hill Living Center.

Mrs. Ponder was a daughter of the late Thurston and Bertha Campbell Martin of Anderson County and was the widow of the late William M. Ponder, Jr.

She taught in elementary schools in Anderson and Pickens counties for thirty-five years. Mrs. Ponder had a strong influence on the lives of the hundreds of children whom she taught and was a Christian example to her sons and their families, her students and to many others whose lives she touched.

Mrs. Ponder is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Pam Ponder, and Milton and Toni Jean Ponder, all of Dacusville; three grandchildren, Josh Ponder of Liberty, Kristi P. Baker and her husband, Chris, of Liberty, and Will Ponder and his wife, Elizabeth, of Columbia; and one great-grandson, Tyler Baker of Liberty; two sisters, Vivian Richardson of Anderson and Hazel Boleman of Townville; and two brothers; Fred Martin of Greenville and Guy Martin of Anderson. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Ponder was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene Martin and Ralph Martin and by a younger sister, Mary Martin.

She was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church where she belonged to the T.E.L. Sunday School Class.

The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Douglas and Dr. Parrish and the staff at Pickens Family Practice for the loving and excellent care that they rendered to Helen during the course of many years and to the staffs at Cannon Memorial Hospital and Laurel Hill Living Center for the professional and loving care that they gave to Helen.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Pickens First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Lloyd Batson, Rev. H.C. Couch and Rev. Dr. Fred Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The body is at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and will be placed in the church at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cannon Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 188, Pickens, SC 29671.

The family is at the home of Milton and Toni Jean Ponder, 134 Deer Creek Road, Easley, SC 29640.
