Helen Elizabeth Singleton of Six Mile, South Carolina, wife to Richard (Dick) Harlan Singleton, passed away at age 89 on November 30, 2024.
Helen received her Bachelor of Arts in Music from Furman University in 1957. She shared her love of music with many others through a long career in music education. This included teaching in Pickens area elementary schools, private piano lessons in her home, and many years at Six Mile Elementary while simultaneously serving as organist and pianist at 1st Baptist Church of Pickens, 1st Baptist Church of Clemson, and Mount Zion United Methodist Church. While she was gifted in music, her true love was her family. She spent long summers at her beloved Edisto Beach with Dick and their six grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Hahn”. Helen and Dick were married in 1959 in Pickens and remained in Pickens County her whole life, spending her last 65 years in the Six Mile area on their farm, which came to be known as Kings Grove Stables. She spent many Friday nights at Singleton Field in the stands supporting Dick and his Daniel Lions football teams for 30 years. Helen was also well known for her amazing cooking and gracious hospitality, sharing her love for good food with all who knew her and were blessed enough to eat at her table. After they both retired from Pickens County schools, Helen and Dick split their time between their farm and Edisto Island. Helen was a faithful member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her husband, Dick Singleton of Central, SC; daughter, Betts McCombs of Fayetteville, AR; son, Richard Singleton (Sandra) of Six Mile, SC; grandchildren, Caroline Motes (Joshua) of Aberdeen, NC, Alle Castro (Greg) of Boulder, CO, Ashton McCombs, IV of Fayetteville, AR, Anna McCombs of Fayetteville, AR, Corbin Singleton (Rebecca) of Greenwood, MS, and William McCombs (Maddie) of Dallas, TX; great-grandchildren, Isabella Motes and Aaron Motes of Aberdeen, NC, Judge Singleton and Ellie Singleton of Greenwood, MS, and Cooper Castro of Boulder, CO; brother, Mendel Stewart (Janice) of Sunset, SC.
