Herb MannEasley
Mr. Herbert George Mann, 99, husband of the late Leota Barr Mann, passed away paecefully Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born on September 13, 1916 in Ft. Meade, Florida, he was the son of the late George English and Mary Fisher Mann . He would have celebrated his 100th birthday next week. Mr. Mann retired from Mowhawk Carpet and was a US Navy Veteran. He was a faithful member of Easley Presbyterian Church, whose members were his family.
Mr. Mann came to South Carolina in the 1930's with the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) encamped near Liberty, SC, as their truck driver. He met Leota Barr who was working as a waitress in a café in Liberty. She had just finished high school. After they were married, they lived with her parents in Easley. Herb lived in that same home until he had to move to a retirement home. His wife died suddenly in 2003 on their 50th wedding anniversary.
The Manns were a loving and devoted couple, who had a heart for children that needed a home. Leota had been adopted by the Barr family, and Herb's mother died when he was 3 years old, being shuffled from one relative to another growing up. Herb and Leota wanted to support the Thornwell Home for Children in whatever way they possibly could. It was Herb's desire to deed their home and property to Thornwell before his death.
Herb Mann was a loving and caring gentleman, that lived a long and fruitful life. Anyone who knew Herb was a better person for having been his friend.
