Hilton V. Rogers, 87, of 313 Upper Highland Drive and husband of 67 years to Evelyn Thorne Rogers, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011.

Born on a small farm in Spartanburg County, he was a son of the late John Benjamin and Olive Boiter Rogers. Hilton was a 1940 graduate of Chesnee High School and attended Spartanburg Junior College prior to joining the Army Air Corps in June of 1942. After serving overseas in the Caribbean and Pacific theaters and upon being discharged in December of 1945, he attended and then graduated in 1948 from Clemson University with honors with a BS in Agronomy. He later attended University of Wisconsin on a Kellogg Fellowship where he received his MS in Cooperative Extension Administration. He did further graduate studies at Cornell University and Clemson University.

Hilton spent his whole working career with Clemson University having begun as an the Assistant County Extension Agent of Saluda County, Extension Agent of Allendale County, the Extension Agronomist specializing in Soil Fertility with Clemson University, the Coordinator for the State Extension Management Information System, the Head of the Department of Fertilizer Inspection and Analysis and retired in 1985 as Head Emeritus of Fertilizer and Analysis.

He was a member of many professional organizations having served as president, secretary, and board member of organizations such as the American Association of Plant Food Officials, Association of Southern Feed, Fertilizer and Pesticide Control Officials, Extension Senate, Extension Specialists Association, South Carolina Agronomy Society, South Carolina Agricultural Council, Pendleton Farmers Society, Allendale Farm Bureau and the Association of Retired Clemson Extension Employees.

Hilton was active in the community having been a member of the Clemson Rotary Club, the Clemson Lions Club and Chairman of Clemson Meals on Wheels. He was also a former deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Clemson.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Nancy Rogers Bottoms and husband Glenn of Boiling Springs, NC; Helen Elizabeth Rogers Grewe of West Union; a son Edwin Bruce Rogers of Swannanoa, NC; four grandchildren, Arvy Bottoms, Alex Grewe, Christine Mayo and Debbie Ritter; and four great-grandchildren, Ira and Carolyn Bottoms; Ebony Wilson and Jamie Mayo.

In addition to his parents, he was preceeded in death by a great-grandchild, Spencer Ritter.

Private graveside services will be held at Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Clemson.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
