Rev. Horace L. Mauldin, beloved husband of Joan Muller Mauldin, 104 Campden Court, Powdersville, passed away after a period of declining health.

Born June 16, 1930 in Lavonia, GA, he was the son of Rev. J. C. Mauldin and Amma Whitehead Mauldin. At age eleven, he began singing with his brothers in concerts and churches. After graduating from Lavonia High School, Horace attended Lee University, in Cleveland, TN where he studied music. Expanding his golden tenor voice, he studied extensively including several years with Dr. John Hoffman in Atlanta.

In 1952, Horace took a position at the Greenwood Church of God where he met and married the pastor's daughter, Joan Muller. They remained married for sixty-one years. In 1956 he and his brothers began traveling as The Mauldin Brothers Quartet with his wife, Joan, as the pianist. When the brothers disbanded, Horace organized a group with his own family and traveled as The Mauldin Family Singers. In 1981 Horace returned to a minister of music position until his retirement.

Rev. Mauldin was an ordained bishop having served as minister of music in Greenville at the Woodside Avenue Church of God and the Tremont Avenue Church of God. In addition to his beautiful tenor voice, Horace directed choirs and taught singing schools, but was best known for his skills as a songwriter.

Horace's songs have been used around the world in published choral arrangements and on recordings of major gospel artists. Some of his most popular songs include: Swing Wide the Gates, Victory Was Won at Calvary, Payday Someday, and My Lord I Want to See.

Mauldin served his denomination on many committees including a thirty-two year term on the state camp-meeting music committee, spending the majority of those years as chairman. On the national level, he served on the publication selection board and the Church of God National Music Committee.

In addition to his music career, Mauldin was a building contractor for forty years, known for quality craftsmanship and honest business dealings. He built houses, churches, gymnasiums and other buildings. He also served his church on the National Architectural Committee. Since retiring in 1998, Mauldin became a member of the choir he once directed, served as a Sunday School teacher, and was a church board member.

Remembered as a loving husband, Horace is survived by his wife Joan Muller Mauldin, two sons Steve Mauldin and Russell Mauldin, both of Nashville, TN, their wives Deborah Mauldin and Janice Mauldin, five grand-children, Eric Mauldin, Adam Mauldin, Lisa Mauldin Crowder, Caroline Mauldin, Whitney Mauldin and one great grand-son Tate Crowder with his father Timothy Crowder and a brother, Joel Mauldin and his wife, Norma.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Harold Mauldin, Rev. Walter Mauldin, Sr. and James Mauldin and a sister, Frances Jones.

Funeral services will be 1:00pm Saturday at the Tremont Church of God, Greenville.
Burial will follow in Robinson Memorial Gardens, Easley.

Visitation will be from 5:00pm until 8:00pm Friday, at the Tremont Church of God.

Current and past staff members of Tremont Church of God and South Carolina Church of God Ministers are invited to serve as Escort of Honor for the funeral service.
