Howard E. Lee, Jr.
Clemson, SC
Howard Eugene Lee, Jr., 91, of 101 Wyatt Avenue died Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at his home.
Born in Plattsburg, NY on November 3, 1921, he was a son of the late Margaret Robinson and Howard E. Lee, Sr. Family changes later sent young Howard, now age 11, to live with his grandparents until his graduation from high school in 1939. The next year, he joined the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company as an apprentice.
In 1943-44, two sentinel events changed Howard's life forever. The first was a draft notice. The second was meeting a young lady from Anderson, SC, named Helen Chamblee. Howard and Helen went on a double blind date. While they weren't initially paired together, love at first sight soon corrected the mismatch. The two quickly became inseparable, and they married on April 8, 1944 in Elizabeth City, NC. Three weeks later, Howard left for Navy boot camp. Because of his technical aptitude, he was selected for training as a Radar Technician. After training, he shipped out for the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS New Mexico.
After the war, Howard and Helen moved to Clemson and Howard earned his Electrical Engineering Degree from Clemson University finishing in 2.5 years. His training in the Navy and at Newport News Ship Yard allowed his accelerated class schedule. His working career was spent primarily at Sangamo Electric Company (later Schlumberger) in Pickens and West Union. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson.
Howard and Helen enjoyed many wonderful trips and experiences with family and loyal friends. Helen was stricken with Alzheimer's disease during her last years. With astounding love, perseverance, and valuable help from dedicated care givers, Howard was able to care for his beloved bride at home until she died in 2006. He goes now to join her in Eternity and it is a joyous reunion for them both!
Surviving are sons, Howard E. Lee, III (Marilyn) of Greenville, NC, David F. Lee (Carol) of Columbia, SC, and Tim R. Lee (Kathy) of Taylors, SC; grandchildren, Matt Lee, Dave Lee, Harding L.
