McFarlane traveling throughout the world, living in the Far East and Europe before retiring to Greenville, SC. She was a graduate of Northwestern State University in Louisiana and served as the librarian of Welcome Elementary School in Greenville up to her retirement in 1975.

Following the death of "Col Mac" in 1976, Mrs. Gillespie spent the next 9 years in Seneca, SC, often traveling to visit her daughter and son-in-law in south Texas and spending time with her son and his family in Greenville, SC. She became active with him in the Pickens County Grange and the SC Beekeepers Association, along with her involvement at Westwood Baptist Church in Easley, serving for several years as her Sunday School Class teacher. Following Luke Gillespie's death, Mrs. Gillespie relocated to south Texas to be near her daughter and family and became a member of First Baptist Church in Weslaco, TX, but continued to make frequent trips back to the area of her roots to visit her son and his family along with life-long friends and family members. She will be forever remembered for her love and generosity with her friends and family, and her deep Christian faith reflected in her life and her legacy.

Mrs. Gillespie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Alice Ann and Archie D. Miles of Weslaco, TX, her son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Susan McFarlane of Greenville, SC and her surviving brother Alan Sheriff and his wife Mary of Easley, SC.
