Dr. J. Alex Hash, 87, professor emeritus at Clemson University, died 10/14/2017 at his home in the assisted living center at The Laurels of Summit Ridge. Dr. Hash formerly lived at home in Central, SC and in assisted living in Memphis, TN.

A native of Independence, VA he was the son of the late Charles G. Hash and Christie Halsey Hash. Dr. Hash was a professor of agricultural education and education at Clemson University from 1965 to 1992 when he retired. Dr. Hash earned a BS degree from Virginia Polytechnic University following a four year enlistment in the U.S. Air Force where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He also earned MS and EdD degrees from Cornell University. Dr. Hash's early career was in teaching vocational agriculture in the public schools of Virginia before he went to Cornell.

Dr. Hash had a variety of interests and service positions throughout his life including member of the Clemson faculty senate; president, secretary, and treasurer of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society; Gamma Sigma Delta; Alpha Tau Alpha; Alpha Zeta; Kappa Delta Pi; and Phi Delta Kappa fraternities and societies. Other professional memberships outside of Clemson University that Dr. Hash was active with included: American Educational Research Association; American Vocational Association; American Association for Agricultural Education; and South Carolina Vocational Association. Dr. Hash also held several positions including national chairman of the Editing-Managing Board for the Journal of Agricultural Education. He was awarded the Honorary State Farmer and American Farmer degrees.

Dr. Hash was an active member of First Baptist Church of Clemson since 1965, a volunteer for Clemson Community Care and Habitat for Humanity, past president of the Clemson Lions Club and also received several recognition awards from the Lions Club and served in other Lions Club officer positions over the years.

Dr. Hash is survived by his two sons and their families, including eight grandchildren: John A. and Theresa (Henderson) Hash, Jr. of Black Mountain, NC (children: John, Christine, and David) and Charles B. and Christine (Nolt) Hash of Lititz, PA (children: Alex, Willem, Samuel, Genevieve, and Jesse). He is also survived by two siblings, Kelly G. Hash of Galax, VA and Kathleen Arrington of Vinton, VA. Dr. Hash had one brother (Dale Hash) and six sisters (Ruth Phipps, Logene Shupe, Virginia Sullivan, Charlotte Ashley, June Miller, and Susie Huggin) predecease him, as well as his beloved wife, Barbara Wise Hash.

Memorial services will be held on 11/04/2017 at the Chapel in Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, SC. Visitation will begin at Noon and the service will be performed by Dr. Rusty Brock of First Baptist Church at 1 PM. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery next to his beloved wife Barbara Wise Hash who passed away in 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of the following: Dr. J.
