Jack Ray, 86, of 121 Elgin Lane died Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Oconee Medical Center.

Born in Waynesville, NC, he was a son of the late Ethel Ray Mitchell. He was a retired Supervisor with Fiske-Carter Construction Company and a retired bus driver for the Pickens County School District. Jack was a US Army Veteran of WWII where he served as a Tank Battalion Leader with the 741 Tank Division C and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was a recepient of a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a lifelong member of Post 9543 VFW in Rogersville, TN, a member of the American Legion and the Central Lions Club. He was also a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are his wife Elsie Dormeyer Ray of the home; son, Jackie (Blanche) Ray of Central; daughter, Patricia (Ray) Smith of Taylors, SC; 4 grandchildren, Cindy Woody, Brian Ray, Jason Ray and Josh Ray; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his mother he was predeceased by his first wife of 66 years, Helen Mull Ray; and half-brother, Hugh Mitchell.

Funeral services will be 11 AM, Saturday at Trinity Wesleyan Church with Rev. Don Milstead officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 AM, Saturday prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Pickens County Honor Flight, c/o Pickens County Sheriff Office, 216 L.E.C. Road, Pickens, SC 29671.
