After a lengthy illness, Dr. Jackson L Flanigan, 85, husband of Rosalyn Arthur Flanigan of Clemson, SC departed his earthly family Saturday, August 5, 2023. He was born August 6, 1937 in Salem, WV, the second son of Jackson Lee Flanigan and Iva Casey Flanigan in the same house that he has restored and maintained since then.
Jack is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-five years, Rosalyn Flanigan, PhD; two sons, Jackson and James Flanigan; and multiple grandchildren and cousins. He also leaves behind his special pet collie, Mr. Darcy.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, John C. Flanigan, and an infant son.
He was a devoted husband, father, and an avid gardener who enjoyed reading.
Jack grew up on the family farm which he and his brother continued to operate after the death of his father. During his early years he was active in 4H, where he always stated that he got some early leadership training.
He attended school in Harrison County, WV and graduated from Salem College in 1959. It was while a student at Salem College [University] he met his wife, Dr. Rosalyn Arthur Flanigan, a marriage which lasted 65 years.
After receiving a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from West Virginia University, he spent two years at the University of Virginia doing advance graduate study and from there he went to VPI and State University where he received a Doctorate in Education Administration.
After many years in West Virginia school systems, Jack moved to Western Kentucky Bowling Green before coming to Clemson University in 1989. He and his wife became devoted Clemson fans and made Clemson their home, where he also was a member of University Lutheran Church.
Jack’s long career in education began with teaching and coaching in New Martinsville, WV where his football team won the 1964 state championship in AA Football. While in Wetzel County Jack served as president of the county education association. He was a principal, a superintendent, and then a college professor – a career that spanned fifty years. He was an author of numerous books, on education, most notably Managing School Indebtedness – A Complete Guide to School Bonding. He also wrote many articles for numerous publications.
In his final 20 years Jackson taught in Clemson in educational leadership with emphasis on school law and finance. He taught numerous students in South Carolina and throughout the area focusing on superintendency and principalship, and the PhD leadership program.
A funeral service will be held at 11AM Friday, August 11th at University Lutheran Church, 111 Sloan St., Clemson, SC.
The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Thursday, August 10th at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, 108 Cross Creek Road, Central.
Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Salem, West Virginia at a later date.
