James Harold Campbell, 93, of 142 White Oak Drive, husband of the late Katie Rogers Campbell died Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Anderson Place, Anderson, SC.
Born in Anderson County, a son of the late Leroy Welborn and Caroline Owen Campbell, Mr. Campbell was a 1936 graduate of Easley High School. He was a 36-year U.S. Air Force Veteran, having served in the South Pacific during World War II, and then transferring into the U.S. Air Force Reserve and National Air Guard, from which he retired as Senior Master Sgt. in 1978.
He owned and operated a 600 acre farm in Anderson County for many years. In 1952, he was elected to the Control Board of Directors of Farmers Cooperative Exchange of Raleigh, NC where he served a three-year term as Chairman of the Board and President. He served on this board for 38 years until his retirement.
He was named Co-op Man of the Year by the South Carolina Council of Co-op's in 1969 and was named Distinguished Agriculturalist by the same organization in 1984. He was a member of the Pendleton Farmers Society and former director of the Farm Bureau of Anderson County.
He was appointed acting postmaster in Williamston in 1964 and continued to work in the postal service until he retired. During this time, he was a Member and Director of the National League of Postmasters, (S.C. branch), and was also a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S.A.
He was a lifetime member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where throughout the years, he was active in church work. He was a former member of the Board of Directors and a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels, former member of the Lions Club, Wren Ruritan Club and Woodmen of the World.
Surviving are long-time friends of the family, Joe, Stephanie and Corey Watt of Williamston, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his mother and father, he was predeceased by five brothers and six sisters. Mr. Campbell was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 2012 in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
The body is at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, Easley, and will be placed in the church cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
