James Henry "Sonny" Crawford, Sr., husband of the late Elizabeth Martin Crawford, died Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in 1921 in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Henry Pressley and Caro Landress Crawford. He was a life-long resident of Clemson where he graduated from Calhoun-Clemson High School and earned his BS and MS from Clemson College. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps serving during WWII in Italy and North Africa. Sonny retired as professor of Horticulture at Clemson University after serving 41 years. His greatest accomplishment was turning a trash dump into the SC Botanical Gardens. In addition to being an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman, he was a devoted fan of all Clemson Athletics and of the teams coached by his two sons. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church.

Surviving are his two sons, James H. (Jim) Crawford, Jr., and wife, Joan of Anderson and David C. (Dedo) Crawford of the home; grandsons, James H. (Jay) Crawford III and wife, Heather of Anderson and Josh Crawford of Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife of 65 years, he was preceeded in death by a sister, Margaret C. Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM, Saturday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central with burial to follow in Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the funeral home.
