James W. Dobson, Jr.

James W. "Jim" Dobson, Jr., 85, of Blairsville, GA, died May 5, 2010 at Union General Hospital, Blairsville.
Son of the late James Walter and Tennie Gillespie Dobson, he was a native of Central, SC and lived most of his life in Blairsville, GA. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Blairsville. He received his B.S. degree at Clemson University and Master's degree at the University of Georgia and was associate professor emeritus of agronomy and former superintendent of the University of Georgia's Georgia Mountain Experiment Station (now known as the Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center), Blairsville. He retired from the Station in 1991 after 38 years of service.
Surviving are a brother, George "Bip" Dobson of Easley, SC, five nieces, four nephews and many great and great-great nieces and nephews, all of whom affectionately knew him as "Uncle Top". In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters Mary Cole, Lois Cantrell, and Jo Sherman; and brothers Robert "Doc" Dobson, Tom Dobson, and Wess Dobson.
He devoted his life to family and public service. Throughout his professional career and in retirement he tirelessly volunteered and was often recognized for his service to numerous church, civic, education, historical, and veterans affiliations.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, May 8 at the Chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from1:30 to 3:00 pm Saturday.
A memorial service will be held at Blairsville, GA at a later date.
