James L. Edwards

James Leon Edwards died on December 16, 2012 at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville.
He was born November 24, 1920 in Charleston, S.C., the son of Benjamin Shipman and Winnie Scott
Edwards. At an early age his family moved to Florence, S.C. where he was educated in the
public schools. After graduating from Florence High School, he entered Clemson University
from which he graduated in 1941. He received a graduate degree from Pennsylvania State
University in 1951. He held memberships in Tau Beta Pi and Alpha Phi Omega fraternities,
as well as life memberships in both the American Society for Engineering Education and the
American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was a World War II naval veteran having served
in the Pacific theater of operations aboard the USS LST 1088 and the USS LCI (L) 871. He
retired from Clemson University as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and as Assistant
Dean of Engineering.
He was the widower of Betty Jo Edwards, who passed away on October 26, 2012. He was also
predeceased by his first wife, Martee Taggart Edwards of Greenwood, S.C. He is survived
by his four children �?" James L, Jr. (Nancy) of Greensboro, N.C. , JoAnn Jones (Tom) of
Simpsonville, S.C., Margaret Clayton (Lannie) of Greenville, S.C. and Rebecca Edwards of
Winston-Salem, N.C., and his eight grandchildren �?" Emily Chang (Cliff), Clarke and James
Edwards, Jennifer Ensley (Matt), Benjamin and Brian Jones, Andrew and Maxwell Clayton. He
felt fortunate and blessed to have been great-grandfather to Crafton Grace Ensley. He is also
survived by Betty�??s sons �?" Hugh Nuckolls, Barry Nuckolls (Rebecca) , and Joe Nuckolls, and
grandchildren �?" Miles, Alex, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Ryan and Cory.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, December 22 in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, SC.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
A private burial will take place on Cemetery Hill in Clemson.
