James King Merck (Daddy Jim), 90, husband of the late Peggy Bagwell Merck, went to be with his Lord on September 26, 2024. He was born on July 2nd, 1934 in Bishopville, South Carolina to the late Harry Wesley Merck and Ruth King Merck. Jim graduated from Bishopville High School in 1952. He went on to receive an Agricultural Engineering degree in 1958 and then a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson.
Jim spent his engineering career with J.E. Sirrine, Hartness International, and was vice-president of Day & Zimmerman in Greenville. Since retirement, Jim has spent endless hours in his workshop, and just within the past few years gotten into making beautiful wooden bowls. With all his accomplishments throughout the years, his family remembers him for his quiet, humble spirit. He was truly a most generous man who loved God first and then his family. Jim was a dedicated longstanding member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Tripp and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Conn Merck; his eight grandchildren, Weston Tripp (Heather), Lance Tripp (Maryann), Thomas Tripp, Jordan Tripp (Elizabeth), Chase Garner, Abbi Merck, Connor Merck, and Carson Merck. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren who loved him beyond words, Wes, Hadley, Palmer, and Mazie Gray Tripp.
Jim was also loved by his special friend, Ms. Dana Wigington and his bonus family Brooke Malcom, Henry and Julia.
In addition to his wife and parents, Jim is preceded in death by a son, James Bagwell Merck; a sister, Anne Merck McDowell; and two brothers, John William Merck and Robert Warren Merck.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from 2:00 PM until 2:45 PM at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will follow at 3:00 PM in the church cemetery.
