James K. Johnson, Jr.- Clemson

James Karl Johnson, Jr., 79, widower of Josephine Wiles Johnson, died Sunday, July 8, 2007 at Presbyterian Village Hearthstone in Austell, GA. He was born in Clinton, SC to Ruby Cunningham and James Karl Johnson, Sr. He was a faculty member at Clemson University until his retirement (1983) as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Head of Continuing Engineering Education Program and served as a national vice president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He served in the US Army in 1946-1947 and was an expert marksman. He received his undergraduate degree from Clemson University and post-graduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University and Georgia Tech. He was a devoted Christian and member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church where he served in many capacities over the years. He was a member of the Lions Club and Rotary Club and was a gifted and lifelong woodworker.

Surviving are a daughter, Jane Johnson, Atlanta, GA; son, James Johnson and his wife Carol of Madison, GA and their 2 sons, Bill and Sam Johnson of Madison, GA; sister and brother-in-law JoAnn and Roy Bryant, Darlington, SC; brother-in-law, Robert Dreher, Norfolk, VA; cousin, James Chandler and his wife Ophelia of Atlanta, GA. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Josephine Wiles Johnson whose death occurred earlier this year.

Memorial services will be Wednesday at 11am at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, 399 College Ave., Clemson, SC 29631 or Alzheimer's Association- Georgia Chapter, 1925 Century Blvd. NE Suite 10, Atlanta, GA 30345.
