James M. "Matt" Hunter

James Madison Gardner Hunter, Matt Hunter of Chapel Hill, NC passed away on November 28, 2022.

Matt grew up in Clemson, SC, the 4th child of five siblings born to Dr. and Mrs. William Hunter (Bill and Jane) on November 19, 1954. Matt attended Daniel High School where he ran track and Christ School, Arden NC where he excelled in science and was second in his graduating class. Matt earned a Bachelors in Social Work from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, and a Masters in Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill. He began a successful career as a therapist, eventually becoming a psychiatric clinical social worker. He worked with patients at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital, and in  Buttner NC at Central Regional Hospital and John Umsted Hospital.

Matt is survived by his beloved partner Ginnie Pypkowski, his son Patrick and his mother Jane Hunter and siblings Gwin Hunter Hanahan married to Dr. James Hanahan of Seneca, SC, and brothers Harvey Hunter married to Nore Hunter of  Arden, NC; Sam of Santa Rosa, CA; and Dr. Mark Hunter married to Melissa Hunter. He had ten nieces and nephews. 

He had a dry wit with much charm and intelligence. He was an avid reader often having five books going at one time. He was a life-long student of history.  He was an excellent cook, preparing meals for friends and family. He eagerly followed Clemson University football and UNC basketball.

He will be greatly missed by his colleagues, patients, friends, and family. Matt had a strong Christian faith, whose final prayer was at the family Thanksgiving when he said the blessing, thanking God for his family. 

His generous and loving heart shined brightly. Rest in peace dearest Matt, you made the world a better place.

Funeral services will be 11 AM, Thursday, December 1, 2022 in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home & Cremations.

The family will receive friends from 10 until 10:50 Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Clemson United Methodist Church.
